Leg Pain Q & A

What should you know about leg pain?

Leg pain can’t be neatly categorized. Your pain may be constant or intermittent, develop gradually or suddenly, and range from a mild ache to debilitating pain. The most important thing to remember about leg pain is that it’s a sign of many possible injuries and health conditions, some of which are life-threatening, as is the case with deep vein thrombosis.

You need immediate help if you suffer an injury, have a deep cut, an exposed bone, or you can’t put weight on your leg. You also need immediate medical attention if you have pain, swelling, redness, or warmth in your calf.

Call One Oak Medical as soon as possible if you experience:

  • Pain that gets worse
  • Symptoms that don’t improve after a few days
  • Signs of infection (redness, warmth, fever)
  • A swollen or unusually cool leg
  • Calf pain after sitting for a long time
  • Pain during or after walking

What other symptoms often accompany leg pain?

Besides pain, you may have other symptoms that reflect the cause of your pain. Swelling, bruising, and an inability to put weight on your leg are classic signs of sprains and fractures.

Other possible symptoms that may occur with leg pain include:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Muscle weakness
  • Joint or muscle stiffness
  • Feeling of pressure
  • Sensory sensitivity

What causes leg pain?

Leg pain arises from many possible causes ranging from acute trauma, where you know the moment you injure your leg, to overuse and degenerative changes that develop gradually.

Musculoskeletal conditions

Several musculoskeletal injuries and conditions can cause leg pain, such as:

  • Fractures
  • Shin splints
  • Hamstring injuries
  • Overuse injuries
  • Strains and sprains
  • Joint injuries
  • Muscle cramps
  • Myalgia

Inflammatory conditions

Arthritis, Achilles tendonitis, and bursitis, as well as other inflammatory conditions, can result in chronic leg pain.

Vascular and neurological problems

Neurological issues, as well as problems with your veins and blood flow, can lead to leg pain. Conditions include:

  • Peripheral artery disease
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Varicose veins
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Sciatica
  • Restless legs syndrome

How is leg pain diagnosed?

After reviewing your medical history and performing a thorough examination, your One Oak Medical doctor may order additional diagnostic tests, such as blood work, X-rays, ultrasound, or a CT scan.

Depending on your symptoms, you may need other specialized tests, such as nerve conduction studies or joint aspiration. Once the cause of your pain is diagnosed, your doctor creates a customized treatment plan to relieve your pain and control the underlying problem.
