Electrophysiology Specialist

Electrophysiology studies allow cardiologists to gain a clearer understanding of what’s causing an abnormal heart rhythm. Faisal Siddiqi, MD is an experienced, board-certified cardiologist who specializes in advanced diagnostic procedures like electrophysiology testing for men and women with irregular heart rhythms called arrhythmias. Dr. Siddiqi is part of One Oak Medical with locations in Paramus and Wayne, New Jersey. If you have an arrhythmia, or you need electrophysiology testing, call one of the offices or schedule a consultation using the online system.

Electrophysiology Q & A

What is an electrophysiology study (EPS)?

Electrophysiology studies provide a method of viewing and recording the electrical activity in your heart on a computer monitor.

An EPS measures the electrical activity in your heart to determine where the arrhythmia — an abnormal or irregular heart rhythm — is occurring. That allows Dr. Siddiqi to make an accurate diagnosis to indicate which treatment is best for your specific arrhythmia, such as medicine, a pacemaker, or another type of procedure to correct the problem.

How is an electrophysiology test performed?

During the procedure, you lie comfortably on an X-ray table. Electrodes on your chest and back connect to computers so Dr. Siddiqi is able to see your heartbeat activity on the computer monitor.

While you’re under sedation and a local anesthetic, Dr. Siddiqi inserts a catheter into a blood vessel that leads to your heart. The catheter usually goes into an artery in your groin, or sometimes in your neck.

Using guided fluoroscopy throughout the procedure, Dr. Siddiqi sends electrical pulses through the catheter to make your heart beat at different speeds while he monitors the activity on the screen. You may feel your heart beating faster, but it isn’t painful. The medical team closely monitors your blood pressure and vital signs during the EPS to ensure your safety and comfort.

If immediate treatment is necessary, Dr. Siddiqi can also perform cardiac ablation or insert a pacemaker during your electrophysiology studies. He can also administer medications during the test to regulate your arrhythmia.

Once Dr. Siddiqi has recorded all of the necessary information, he removes the catheter and electrodes, and you go into a recovery room.

Why would I need an electrophysiology study?

If you suffer from an arrhythmia and are at risk for a life-threatening health situation, you may need an EPS so Dr. Siddiqi can learn:

  • What’s causing your arrhythmia
  • If certain medications work to control your irregular heart rhythms
  • If a specific area of your heart needs treatment to prevent arrhythmia
  • If you’re at risk for syncope or sudden cardiac arrest

The test may also help determine if you need a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to regulate your heart rhythm

Dr. Siddiqi specializes in arrhythmia and electrophysiology testing, so if you need to have this procedure, you can rest assured you’re under the highest standard of care. This testing can help determine the right treatment for your arrhythmia and could prevent a life-threatening situation in the future.
