EKG Q & A

What is an EKG?

An electrocardiogram (EKG) is a diagnostic test that records electrical signals in your heart to identify potential heart problems. The painless procedure involves the placement of electrode sensors on your chest and limbs that record the electrical impulse made with each beat of your heart. The EKG records the timing and strength of each signal as it moves through your heart.

Dr. Siddiqi interprets the data the EKG produces to determine if you have an abnormal heart rhythm or other heart abnormality.

Why do I need an EKG?

Dr. Siddiqi may request an EKG if he suspects you have a heart condition or if there is a history of heart problems in your family. He may recommend testing if you:

  • Have a heart arrhythmia
  • Experience chest pain
  • Previously had a heart attack
  • Have a rapid pulse
  • Feel dizziness or confusion
  • Are weak or feel chronic fatigue

Other symptoms of a potential heart condition may require EKG testing to help Dr. Siddiqi pinpoint the cause.

What happens during an EKG?

Before the EKG procedure, Dr. Siddiqi discusses any medications you are taking. You may need to stop certain medications that can influence the results of your test.

During the EKG, you can relax in One Oak Medical’s comfortable office environment. Dr. Siddiqi attaches sticky electrode patches to your skin, usually on the chest area and sometimes on your limbs. Each electrode patch has a wire that attaches to a monitor. It may be necessary to shave your skin if hair prevents the electrodes from firmly sticking.

While you lie still, the EKG technology records the electrical impulses of your heartbeat. Dr. Siddiqi interprets the results during your appointment or a follow-up visit.

What conditions can an EKG diagnose?

Depending on the results of your EKG, Dr. Siddiqi may request additional testing to determine if you have conditions such as:

  • Abnormal heart rate
  • Arrhythmia
  • Heart attack
  • Structural abnormalities of the heart

EKG results can even help determine if your heart is receiving an adequate supply of oxygen and blood.

If Dr. Siddiqi discovers any heart abnormalities, he creates a custom treatment plan to address the issues and prevent further heart problems. Depending on your needs, he may recommend surgical or nonsurgical procedures to protect your heart.
