Shoulder Pain Q & A

What causes shoulder pain?

Many factors can cause persistent shoulder pain. Some of the most common shoulder pain causes include:

  • Arthritis
  • Fractures
  • Instability
  • Tendon tears and inflammation

Your doctor evaluates your shoulder and reviews your medical history and regular activities to determine the cause of your pain, and then creates a customized treatment plan to alleviate pain and restore shoulder mobility.

What is shoulder instability?

Shoulder instability is a condition that occurs when the head of your upper arm bones moves out of the shoulder socket due to injury or overuse. The condition is commonly known as a shoulder dislocation.

You can experience partial instability, where the ball of your upper arm only comes partially out of the socket. Total instability is when the ball moves entirely out of its place in the socket.

Shoulder instability can frequently occur if your surrounding tendons, ligaments, and muscles tear due to overuse or trauma. Frequent dislocations can also increase your risk of developing arthritis in your shoulder joint.

What treatment options are available for shoulder pain?

At One Oak Medical, both nonsurgical and surgical treatments are available to relieve your shoulder pain.

Your doctor can initially recommend over-the-counter or prescription medications to reduce pain and inflammation in your shoulder. She may also refer you for physical therapy to strengthen your shoulder muscles and improve your range of motion.

If these treatments aren’t effective, your surgeon performs either a traditional or minimally invasive shoulder surgery. You may require surgical treatment if you experience frequent shoulder dislocations, tendon or muscle tears, or have arthritis or another degenerative condition.

Your doctor may also recommend shoulder reconstruction or joint replacement surgery if your shoulder joint is too damaged by arthritis or an injury. This type of treatment is often the last resort for restoring functionality to your shoulder and alleviating pain for good.

If surgery is necessary, your surgeon creates a customized treatment plan to address your specific needs. He discusses your surgical options during your initial consultation so you can make an informed decision.
