Hip Replacement Q & A

What is a hip replacement?

A hip replacement is a procedure that removes damaged bone or tissue from the hip joint and replaces it with artificial components. In most cases, these parts are made from materials like metal, sturdy plastic, or ceramic.

The most common reason patients require a hip replacement is arthritis. It may also be necessary if you’ve sustained a hip injury that didn’t heal properly.

If you’ve tried other approaches without success or your pain is getting worse over time, hip replacement may be the best treatment for you. The procedure enables you to recover mobility in your hip and live pain-free.

What happens during a hip replacement procedure?

To perform the hip replacement procedure, your surgeon makes an incision over the front or the side of your hip to access the joint. Using small surgical tools, he removes the damaged bone and cartilage, then he secures the implant materials, which may include an artificial ball and socket, into your pelvic bone.

After the doctor ensures the correct structure and placement of the artificial materials, he closes the incision with stitches.

Dr. Mahmood and Dr. Badri have used medical devices manufactured by Stryker, Zimmer Biomet, and DePuy Synthes in their surgeries.

What results can I expect from a hip replacement procedure?

Most people return to their normal activities within 6-12 weeks after hip replacement surgery. You’ll continue to gain additional strength and improved flexibility over the next six months to a year.

You can expect less pain in the hip joint and an increased range of motion; however, you’ll still need to be careful with physical activity and gradually build up your strength. Many people benefit from physical therapy after a hip replacement procedure as well.

In time, you can do all of your favorite activities again, without pain. Dr. Mahmood and Dr. Badri are experienced orthopedic surgeons who have helped hundreds of patients successfully heal from hip problems with replacement surgery.
