Heart Catheterization Q &A

What is a heart catheterization?

Heart catheterization, or cardiac catheterization, is a diagnostic procedure for heart conditions. During a heart catheterization, Dr. Siddiqi inserts a long, thin catheter (tube) through a vein or an artery in your groin or neck, that leads to your heart. Using this catheter, he can get a clear picture of your heart activity on a computer monitor.

He can also inject dye into the catheter so he can see your blood as it flows through your heart. That allows Dr. Siddiqi to know if you have any blockages or problems with your heart valves. He can also perform treatments, such as coronary angioplasty, while doing a heart catheterization.

Cardiac catheterization is a safe, low-risk procedure that can provide vital information about your heart so that Dr. Siddiqi can determine the best type of treatment plan for your specific heart condition.

Why would I need a cardiac catheterization?

If you experience chest pain, an arrhythmia, or other heart issues, heart catheterization may provide valuable information as to what’s causing your symptoms. During a heart catheterization, Dr. Siddiqi can:

  • Look for problems with your heart valves
  • Check the function of your heart chambers
  • Perform a biopsy of heart tissue
  • Locate narrow or blocked blood vessels
  • Measure the pressure in your heart
  • Diagnose congenital heart defects

While Dr. Siddiqi is doing a catheterization, he can also perform a treatment called coronary angioplasty, in which he inserts a “balloon” into a blocked artery.

Once in place, he temporarily inflates the balloon to open up blood flow through the artery to create a wider path for blood to get to and from your heart more easily. He may also place a stent, or a small mesh tube, into the artery to support the blocked area of the artery.

Dr. Siddiqi may perform other treatments during a heart catheterization, such as repairing heart valves or performing ablation to treat an arrhythmia.

What is a cardiac ablation?

An ablation is a procedure sometimes used to correct an arrhythmia, or problems with your heart rhythm that causes it to beat too fast or too slow, or irregularly.

During an ablation procedure, Dr. Siddiqi uses heat or cold to destroy an area of tissue that’s causing your arrhythmia or reroute the electrical signals. The ablation treatment restores your heart rhythm to a normal pattern.
